I’m expecting a bounce back at some point — he’s had a brutal early schedule (all three starts on the road vs. the Phillies, Nationals, and Blue Jays), but I’m not sure it happens tonight. The D-backs are a nightmare matchup for him. They have the 2nd-lowest whiff rate in the league, including ranking 2nd vs. four-seamers and 12th vs. sliders — the two pitches Strider leans on for 88% of his arsenal. They also swing at the first pitch less than any team in baseball, while Strider is struggling to find the zone early — just a 53% first-pitch strike rate this season (career low). That sets up a rough dynamic where Arizona can get into favorable counts and avoid expanding the zone. I’m projecting Strider to get pulled around the 5-hitter third time through, and that’s especially meaningful against this lineup. The D-backs’ top 4 hitters have a 7% lower expected K rate than the bottom 5 — so he likely misses out on the part of the order that’s easiest to rack up Ks. They’re also sending just 3 RHB to the plate, and Strider has struck out righties at a 7% higher clip over his career. I still believe in the long-term rebound, but tonight’s matchup is sneaky tough.
